News::State Of The Game: The International

WC - Its come down to this: Two powerhouse organisations. Both the top contenders for the title. The final is going the distance in more ways than one. The crowd on the verge of cardiac arrest and yet, simply cannot look away. Its the final push. One last stand. The players leave nothing left in the tank. Desperation on a level that dwarfs anything that has come before it. The commentators scream the victors name. One team rejoices in the arms of each other. The other is consoled by their captain. And so begins, the long road to The International 4.

News::The Chaos Engine hits Steam and GOG.com this month

Abstract Games, the folks responsible for porting Hotline Miami to PlayStation 3 and Vita, has also been working to restore The Chaos Engine / Soldiers of Fortune. The classic top-down shooter will have some additions, like revised graphics and 16-directional movement, but such features are largely optional. By all accounts, this won't be another painful awful remake -- instead, it's being pitched as a "restoration." Exactly what I want.

The new version is hitting Steam, GOG.com, and Get Games on August 29, 2013 for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Normally, it'll be $9.99, but you can save a buck by pre-purchasing now.

"There are many fond memories of The Chaos Engine and I wanted to make sure that the game was true to the original without losing its charm during the restoration process," says Bitmap Brothers founding member Mike Montgomery. "The option to play in the original ‘Classic’ mode with the added option to play in ‘Enhanced mode’ with its refined pixel-perfect finish is a clever way to satisfy all enthusiasts!" Being able to play this again in 2013 is pretty freakin' cool.

News::Five Games I Discovered on My First Computer in 1993

UM writes: Oh boy, this article certainly brings on the nostalgia train. My first family computer was a Hewlett Packard Bell 386 waaaay back in the early 1990s, which had the old trustworthy Windows 3.1 as the operating system along with sporting a whopping 8 megabytes of RAM and 50 megabytes of storage under the hood. A pretty sweet rig, huh? My dad bought this beast through work since it was important for him to have a computer due to the nature of his job at the time. He paid a dumbfounded $3000 for something that is literally worthless now! This was a few years before the Internet became mainstream (though we got dial-up a year later) so my curious pre-teen self-taught myself how to use it without the aid of the world wide web. While learning, I searched every nook and cranny until I found something interesting or fun on this novel thing they called a desktop computer. To my still-developing, puny brains delight, I found some hidden entertainment (no, not porn!) in the form...
