News::Actual Sunlight An Honest Look at a Dishonest Mind

Chaz at Twinfinite writes, The first thing that must be said is that Actual Sunlight is not something for everyone. Dealing through and through with depression, failed relationships, and suicide, this isnt a world where everything works out or people get all the help that they need. The story is a stark, no-frills expression of a man in the depths of the darkest corners of the human psyche, and the text-heavy play is littered with profanity and extreme self-loathing and hopelessness. An inescapable dread and sadness permeates nearly every line; both interactions with other characters and frank internal reflection offer little to feel good about, or to take any sense of accomplishment from.

News::Not a Hero's 2D cover-based shooting killed me about a dozen times

Devolver Digital had a great showing at PAX East this year. Though Hotline Miami 2 might have had the most buzz going in, not long into the show people were shouting about Not a Hero. Developed by Roll7 (of OlliOlli fame), it could just be the next pixel shooter juggernaut.

Though its visuals are beautifully retro (complete with the neon pink and teal color palette that is in vogue right now -- though each of the game's five districts will have a different look), its gameplay takes cues from more modern shooters. Specifically, Not a Hero features a cover mechanic, and it punishes players who do not use it well.

News::Heart Forth, Alicia is the best Kickstarter I've seen in ages

There's been a resurgence of Metroidvania games in recent years thanks to crowdfunding but not all of them have lived up to our lofty ambitions for the genre. Many haven't. As such, I hope you're not so skeptical as to avoid giving Heart Forth, Alicia a chance -- it's the real deal.

If you enjoyed Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and have been waiting for another game to come even close to attaining that level of excellence, you'll want to read up on Heart Forth, Alicia after watching the pitch video above. It's been in development for years now, so the mechanics you'd expect are in place, and the level of quality is there. Specifically, the Kickstarter is to bring on additional people to help lone developer Alonso Martin finish the game sooner than later.

Heart Forth, Alicia will be published by Starbound's Chucklefish, if that matters to you -- I see it as an extra stamp of approval (not that one was needed) -- and it's set for release on PC next year. This will go far, far beyond the initial $60,000 goal, that's for sure.

News::Hyper Light Drifter probably won't be out until early 2015

Heart Machine pushed back its wildly anticipated Hyper Light Drifter from the previous June 2014 release to the end of 2014. Heart Machine's Alex Preston, talking to Jonathan Holmes at PAX, explained that, while they're still aiming for an end of 2014 release, "probably early 2015 is more realistic."

Which is fine. When it's done it's done. When you get lucky enough to strike an over $600,000 Kickstarter campaign, no point in not going all out. It just feels cosmically unfair that this game, which plays so well, is anywhere from eight to ten months away. Good things to those who wait and all that.

News::PS1 title Hyper Crazy Climber now on PSN

Back in 1996, Nihon Bussan released a climbing game in Japan called Hyper Crazy Climber. In it, you just climb. Buildings, rocks, landmarks -- whatever. Climb, man. Show Nathan Drake how it really is.

The controls are interesting in that each limb is mapped to a different input. You're going to have to be pretty coordinated to make your way to the top.

MonkeyPaw has brought this weird title to our shores this week as a PlayStation Network release, available for play on PS3, PSP, and Vita, priced at $5.99.

Look, you're getting the rock wall climbing experience for $6, and without the crotch intrusion.

Ive never seen 3D models rendered this well in a browser before, and if its any indication of what they can do outside of a browser, were in for a visual treat. Mike from Twinfinite writes, "As I await the imminent release of Dark Souls II on PC, as well as the (likely?) release of Grand Theft Auto V there as well, Im not terribly concerned by the delay because Im confident the experiences will be every bit as memorable as they would have been at release. For some others however, I cant help but feel that the ship has sailed on having that special gaming experience."

News::Batman: Arkham Origins: Blackgate - Deluxe Edition Review | Worlds Factory

Worlds Factory: "Overall though, the game has serious issues with its design which unfortunately affect the other elements as well; considering this is a Metroidvania, design should have been of utmost importance. As much as one can be a fan of Batman, its probably better to either wait for Rocksteadys Arkham Knight, or just pick up last years Batman: Arkham Origins, which was really good according to our review."

News::Review: Steins;Gate

Time travel is infinitely more interesting once you leave the trappings of the TARDIS or any one of those familiar (some would say hackneyed) science fiction mainstays behind. Steins;Gate , the visual novel that inspired a 24-episode anime series, film, and several other spinoffs, has woven a masterful tale that explores the trope in a manner not unlike the popular deconstruction of magical girl series, Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

We're all familiar with the philosophy that altering even the smallest detail from a past event could alter the future drastically, but how much damage could a text message do? Could it destroy the hopes and dreams of everyone you love? How far could you go to make things right again?

News::Pixelitis Picks: Games we hope to see in virtual reality

"For the longest time, virtual reality has been relegated to the annals of science fiction. Sometimes a convenient way for Picard and Q to travel to the far distant past, other times a method for hackers to storm major servers a la Neuromancer, the idea of virtual reality seemed so distant. Yet with the advent of devices like the Oculus Rift and Sonys Project Morpheus, the day where man can experience their digital worlds as if theyve been transported to them could be coming sooner, rather than later. During PAX East this past weekend in Boston, long lines persisted at any booth featuring the Oculus Rift, demonstrating the fact that gamers are ready for the tech even as the world scoffs at Facebooks meddling in the matter. Given that interest in the technology, we wondered what kind of games wed like to see get the V.R. treatment. From the odd to the fantastic, we believe these digital worlds would be worth the price of admission." - Pixelitis Staff
