News::What is a Panopticon?

Ahead of Freedom Wars ' October 28 release in North America, PlayStation Blog has listed which Panopticons will appear in the Western version of the PS Vita game. A what now?

Think of a building designed in such a way that a person can watch inmates without them knowing when they're being monitored, and you've got the basic concept. Freedom Wars is a third-person action game with many Panopticons -- in Japan, there were 47, one for each prefecture.

Players, who are criminals with million-year sentences, can compete with each other in a giant leaderboard-driven turf war. Sounds fun, doesn't it? There's going to be 50 Panopticons based on worldwide cities for the Western release. In the US, we've got New York City, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Anchorage, Chicago, and Houston. There's a full list viewable below.

Sony also announced that Freedom Wars will have player-versus-player modes at launch.

News::The Dark Throne is a 90s Styled Action RPG Unlike The Rest

Marcus Estrada writes: "Did you ever play and adore games like Alone in the Dark, Bioforge, Ecstatica, Dino Crisis, and Resident Evil? If so, you've got some very similar tastes to developer Brett Munro. He's taken his love of these third person polygonal gameplay experiences and used them to inspire The Dark Throne. No, it doesn't appear to be a horror title, but it is similar in many other ways."

But you can tell it was made for MXGP fans exclusively - sure, someone new to it will get some enjoyment, but will likely have limited appeal in the long run."

News::First else Heart.Break() trailer reminds me it exists

Everyone remembers else Heart.Break(), right? Of course you do, because it was on my "Top 30 indies to look out for in 2013" list! There was very little information on the game at that point, and apparently I thought it would come out in 2013. Hah! Not even close.

But now we have a trailer and even a website. After looking at the developer's Twitter page, the game is evidently finished! It revolves around changing code in order to pass certain obstacles, which isn't surprising given the title. The trailer mentions that the "bits" have replaced atoms, which may lead to some serious morality questions being posited throughout the game.

No release date has been mentioned, but I would imagine it's not far off since the game is essentially completed.

Marcus Estrada writes: "Even if they don't mean for it to be the case, many flight games are incredibly frustrating. At times its due to their rigid, obsessive adherence to reality. At other times its shoddy controls that are to blame. As such, flight has really lost its appeal to many gamers. InnerSpace hopes to resuscitate a taste for flying in games thanks to simple, accessible controls and an environment that begs to be explored."

News::Risk of Rain's new engine should mean less slowdown

Risk of Rain is a great little action platformer that'll make you feel like garbage before building you up into an unstoppable force of destruction. Try it, sometime! You can even bring friends along.

Developer Hopoo Games has an update out now (full patch notes are here, or below) that's notable for new players and veterans alike. Risk of Rain now uses a newer, smoother-running engine, for starters. Much needed. There are also two new characters, 10 extra items, and six new challenges. More stuff to unlock, basically. Curious to see what those classes are.

I tried to pick the game up after what feels like an eternity but got my ass kicked. It's for the best, really -- I don't need to spend the rest of today in Risk of Rain. But it's nice knowing I have reasons to come back. That damned "Drown 20 Whorls" achievement will forever taunt me.

News::Alien: Isolation: A Beautiful Place to Die

Technology Tell writes, "Alien: Isolation is an attempt to redeem the franchise, partially by reproducing the tension of the original Alien, and partially by incorporating the lessons in building immersive worlds that video games have been imparting for the last generation. Alien: Isolation is just as much Bioshock as it is Alien, Sevastopol Station arriving by way of Rapture. Alien: Isolation exchanges underwater for space and the past for the future, but the result is similar: an immense enclosed system thats in a state of tumultuous decay. Both games create coherent, fully-formed worlds that rigorously adhere to a particular design aesthetic."

News::Five Nights at Freddy's 2 jump scares onto Greenlight

Just getting over the PTSD of your last visit to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza? Well too damn bad, because it's time to get spooked again.

Normally I'd roll my eyes at the idea of a sequel being announced barely three months since the release of the original, but in this case I don't mind a bit. I have an irrational love for those animatronic monsters and can't wait to be horribly mutilated by them again. Given the massive cult following for the first one, it's practically guaranteed that Five Nights 2 will break out of Greenlight and into our nightmares soon.

Details hinted at by the release teaser trailer suggest a few changes to the core mechanics. You'll still be trying to track and stave off the malfunctioning cast members of Freddy Fazbear's by spying on them with security cameras and strategically turning lights on and off, but this time there won't be any doors to hide behind. Instead, you'll be playing possum by wearing a fake Freddy head, trying to bluff your way out of sticky situations. Sounds tense for sure.

News::Costume Quest 2 Review: Sugar-coated | Technology Tell

Technology Tell writes, "Costume Quest 2 is at its comedic best when it uses the costumes themselves for gags. The team at Double Fine did a great job trying to thread humor into the mechanics themselves, and are, for the most part, very successful. Saying too much would spoil the fun, but a few of the costumes not only produce recurring gags, but recurring gags that are instrumental in advancing the story. Respect."

Earlier this week, on Monday, a federal judge ruled against EA shareholders Ryan Kelly and Louis Mastro who both filed a class-action lawsuit against the company, claiming that Electronic Arts (and associated executives) made false claims about Battlefield 4s quality before the games official release. United States District Judge Susan Illston ruled that EA chief executive officer Andrew Wilson and chief financial officer Blake Jorgensons pre-release comments about Battlefield 4 amounted to nothing more than corporate optimism or puffery. Ultimately, Illston stated that shareholders Kelly and Mastro cannot further pursue securities fraud claims against EA.
