News:: Duke Grabowski is my kind of SCUMM

Allow me to introduce you to Duke Grabowski, mighty pirate. He's a lunkheaded, musclebound mouth-breather who used Int as his dump stat, and prefers punching to talking his way out of problems. He's also the protagonist in his own game, a throwback tribute to the Monkey Island series that's available on Steam right now.

So, who here likes Monkey Island games? I know I do. I have a framed, signed print of Steve Purcell's artwork from Tales of Monkey Island displayed prominently in my home. I've played through every game in the series multiple times, and I often find myself quoting memorable lines (That's the second-biggest Q-tip I've ever seen!). I've always loved the implication that the hero, Guybrush Threepwood didn't seem to be really good at what he was doing, but prevailed through persistence and a willingness to try anything to get closer to his goal.

I wasn't really aware of Lucasarts games until the third installment, The Curse of Monkey Island. That was a great game to start with, though, containing full voice acting, gorgeous hand-drawn animation, and a long, involved quest with scalable difficulty (basically, adding extra steps to some of the puzzles). There's no doubt in my mind that Curse was one of the finest adventure games ever made, and should be held up along with other Lucasarts games like Sam and Max hit the Road and Day of the Tentacle when talking about the adventure genre's glory days.

After playing through Curse, I tracked down copies of the earlier games in the series, and happily bought them when they were remastered. I also bought and enjoyed playing through the later games in the series, though I thought Escape From Monkey Island was hurt somewhat by its transition to 3D. Eventually, Telltale got the rights to do an episodic Monkey Island series, but that's the last we've heard from the franchise since it wrapped up in 2009.

A little while ago, I got a private message here on the site from somebody affiliated with Venture Moon Industries, the team behind Duke Grabowski, Mighty Swashbuckler. They'd seen my writeup on Thimbleweed Park, an upcoming game based on Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle from The Secret of Monkey Island's director, Ron Gilbert. They invited me to try out their game, since it seemed like I was a fan of Lucasarts-style adventures. Duke is heavily inspired by the Monkey Island series, and even has Bill Tiller on staff, who helped make Curse of Monkey Island when he worked at Lucasarts.

Duke Grabowski is a loving tribute to the latter Monkey Island games, and wears its influence on its sleeve. It may sound a little unfair to compare Duke Grabowski to the Monkey Island series, but as you can probably tell from my earlier statements, I mean it as a compliment. Duke's visuals are lush and colorful, and the Caribbean-flavored music is spot-on. What's more, every interaction Duke has with his environment triggers a unique voice line, and the acting is well above average. One thing I appreciate is that it's not possible to get yourself into a failure state, something I particularly enjoyed about Lucasarts' offerings. It's easy to imagine Duke having a parallel adventure somewhere close to Guybrush, neither crossing the other's path.

Duke's story sees him vying to become the captain of his ship after his former captain has expired. His fellow pirates don't really respect him, but he tends to get violent when he doesn't get his way. So one of the other crewmen, a pirate called Slew Face, tells him that to become their leader, he should demonstrate his ability to woo some ladies, as their former captain had something of a reputation as a Don Juan. Really, all he's doing is getting Duke to leave the others alone for a while, but Duke's not especially gifted in the brains department, so he takes Slew Face at his word.

Duke can move around his environment and interact with anything he sees. The three possible interactions with every object are context sensitive, and Duke can use his eyes, mouth, or hands when he wants to do something. Usually he'll just look, talk to, or interact with an object, but occasionally the mouth icon can mean he tries to eat or lick an object, or the hands icon will indicate you want to punch something. It's a clever way of presenting interactions, and sets up some funny scenes.

While Guybrush is punier than your average pirate, he's usually the smartest guy in whatever room he enters. As I mentioned above, Duke is quite the opposite, so he has a different approach to the pirate themed puzzles he encounters. As an example, in one puzzle Duke needs to get past a group of zombie pirates who are well stocked with cannons and cannonballs. While Guybrush might disguise himself as a woodland creature or find an alternate path, Duke's solution is to rip a tree out of the ground and use it as a bat to knock the cannonballs back at the enemy's position.

Not all of the puzzles can be solved with brawn, however, and for those that require a more subtle touch, Duke can ask for help from one of his companion characters. When they join him, their special skill will be added to Duke's inventory, and he can "use" them to help with puzzles, sort of like how Sam used Max as an item in Hit the Road.

The game does have a few issues. The text shadows sometimes don't line up with the text, so a strange ghosting effect shows up under some of the dialogue lines. There isn't support for cloud saves, so if you move from one computer to another, you'll have to start the game over. There's a little less polish than you might expect if you've played Monkey Island games, but that's forgivable considering the ambition of the project and the size of the team that's made it. Adjust your expectations going in, and you should be fine.

I enjoyed my time with Duke Grabowski, even though he's initially sort of hard to like as a character. I found that the more I played, the more he grew on me. I think I might know where his last name came from, and that was a nice touch. The team said that they'd like to make more games in the series, provided the first does well. It's available on Steam right now, so if you're interested in a new Monkey Island game, this is as close as you can get for the time being.

News:: Who's excited for Pokemon Sun & Moon?

By the time this goes up, we'll be less than a week before the release of one of Nintendo's most anticipated titles for the year, Pokémon Sun and Moon. From what Nintendo has drip fed us over the past year, it has been teasing some major shake-ups to Pokémon's identity mechanically such as the removal of the HM system, battling Totem Pokémon, and the Island Challenge in the stead of the traditional gym and Pokémon league journey. And inevitably, no talk about Pokémon is complete without bringing up your favorite choices.

News:: Go on a road trip with your buds in a Final Fantasy XV supercar

Racing games often get associated with car commercials, but it's more unusual for RPGs to get into the mix. But those madmen actually did it. And using Final Fantasy to boot!

"The Star of Lucis", a one-of-a-kind, custom Audi R8 Supercar, is transitioning from the world of Final Fantasy XV into our much more mundane and depressing world thanks to Audi's Japan branch. Gussied up in chrome filigree and fancy rims, the car was first seen being driven by various characters in the Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV film. I remarked in my review of the movie that Kingsglaive's biggest success was in visualizing the game's setting, creating "the kind of place where contemporary office buildings, cellphones, TVs, and copious product placement can stand comfortably alongside overdesigned costumes, massive Final Fantasy creatures, and elaborate magical spells and effects."

Come next week, one lucky rich person will have the chance to purchase The Star of Lucis for a cool ¥50,000,015 (see the symbolic "15" in there?), or just under $468,000. For everyone else, there's the absurd trailer below, this website, the Kingsglaive film, and possibly Final Fantasy XV itself. For my money, it would've been much more impressive if Audi had created a copy of the Regalia, that awesome limo that Noctis and his pals actually drive around in the game, but I suppose this'll have to do.

News:: Ben Heck's Atari junk keyboard, part 2

The Ben Heck Show - Episode 262 - Ben Heck's Atari Junk Keyboard Part 2: Stepped Tone Generator

We're not so sure about Ben and Atari making beautiful music together, though the Ben Heck Show team certainly builds good circuits. Previously, they took apart a keyboard and made a manually activated switch matrix to read the piano keys. Now it's time to take those outputs and hook them up to a 555 logic chip array to create the Atari inspired sound effects.

There's a lot of wiring to do, so Ben and Felix split up the tasks. Ben wires up the bank of chips onto a board that will sit on top of the transistor array that Felix is wiring, with a header interfacing them. Karen meanwhile, paints and designs the casing in a retro feel befitting of the time. Ben and Felix then go to work on making additional adjustments to the board and create a totally '80s Atari junk keyboard. What instrument would you like the team to make? Join the element14 Community to tell us about your music hacks and suggest an instrument.

News:: Your opportunities to date majestic, mythical beasts has been confirmed

With disgusting acts of violence towards Queer Americans on the rise and a Vice President elect with a long history of demonizing any person of behavior that strays from the hetero-normative standard, many Americans are rightfully afraid for their lives. That's why now more than ever, any expression of queerness, no matter how silly or lighthearted, needs the support of those who want to stop this country from returning to the culture-wide, normalized homophobia we had just begun to crawl out of.

It just so happens that there are not one, but two games on Kickstarter right now that celebrate romance outside of the restraints of puritan ideals. Monster Prom, a delightful, local multi-player competitive dating sim, and Project Tingler, a Chuck Tingle adventure, are both fully funded kickstarter games that look to do just that. Each still has a few days left in their respective campaigns if you want to get on board. It's particularly amazing to me that Project Tingler was funded, given its relatively large budget and its status as a free game.

In the face of so much hatred and apathy, it's relieving to focus on the fact that for many, love is still real. We'd all do well to hold on to that truth as we face the ugliness and cruelty to come.

News:: Review: Cartoon Network: Battle Crashers

Something terrible has happened to our children in the last decade and we haven't even noticed or cared. The characters and cartoons they love have been turned into awful cash-in video games that don't even bother to get basic details correct. Forget the Ghostbusters reboot, we are literally buying games for our children and destroying their childhoods right in front of them while it is happening.

I'm beginning to think that game publishers and or developers actively dislike children, as time and time again I play games based on licenses meant for kids that are absolutely atrocious. I'm not saying buying this game for your kid is definitely child abuse, but I am saying at the very least you must fucking hate them.

News:: RIver City Ransom: Underground is fierce upon wake up

Confused about which River City game is which? Here's a quick rundown. River City Ransom: Underground was kickstarted in 2013, and while the game is content complete, it has not yet been released. Meanwhile, River City: Tokyo Rumble, a 3DS port of the sequel to the original River City Rampage, was released in Japan in 2013. Aksys localized it a few months ago, and it received a warm reception.

The two games may look similar, but their resemblance is only skin deep. I enjoyed River City: Tokyo Rumble, but it's undeniably bare bones. The graphics and combat system were largely recycled from past games, and the lack of online multi-player is a huge limitation.

River City Ransom: Underground promises to be a whole other story. In just under a minute, this teaser trailer has already shown off more new art and fighting mechanics than the entirety of Tokyo Rumble. The game's developers have also confirmed that River City Ransom: Underground's online competitive and co-operative modes are already running smoothly.

Chances are we'll be seeing a lot more of the game in coming months as the developers prepare it for launch. I wonder if the naked butts will be back?
