News:: Briefly relive the '90s again and see 1994 Nintendo in this documentary clip

The recent release of  Nintendo's SNES Mini Classic has plenty of gamers and newcomers reliving the 90's all over again with some great games from the era that defined a generation. I thought it would be appropriate to get deeper into 90's nostalgia with a short 9 minute clip from the 1994 French documentary Otaku. The documentary segment about Nintendo goes on a brief introduction and company history, and goes into its business philosophy along with some short interviews of the employees in Japan.

Much of the info in the video are things that many video game enthusiasts already know but seeing Nintendo's offices and workers around 1994 is still a trip, considering that 1994 is about 23 years ago. Mario's daddy, Shigeru Miyamoto, is also featured and gives us the basic info on Mario and just looks pretty young at the age of 40.

This short clip has been around on the internet for a while but is now friendly to English-only speakers who don't like reading subtitles but do like hearing emotionless computer female voiceovers.

News:: What is the most aesthetically pleasing console you own?

Across years of releases, video game consoles have had almost every look under the sun. From the loud, bright-green-on-black of the original Xbox, to the translucent black Sega Saturn which adamantly declares on its disc tray "This is cool."

I think everyone has a favorite console. For myself, my experiences with both the SNES and the original PlayStation will always be the strongest, but of all the consoles you own, or have ever owned, which one is the most pleasing to look at?

News:: What are some of your favorite game visuals?

In my circle of friends, I can't stop singing the praises of Cuphead. Asides from its rewarding challenge of overcoming some splendidly designed boss encounters, its distinct 1930s cartoon aesthetic is unique and hard to compare to anything else right now. Everything feels so authentic, from the film grain effect, the rubber hose motions on everyone's animation, and the absolutely incredible music. My favorite part is the announcer hyping you up before a fight in a way that's reminiscent of Capcom vs. SNK 2.

News:: Dragon Quest XI on the Switch will use the Unreal Engine

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a bonified hit in Japan with more than three million copies sold between the Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation 4. A western release is planned for next year and fingers crossed western gamers will be able to choose between either version of the game and not just have to deal with one or the other. Hopefully, by the time that 2018 release date comes around, we'll also be able to grab it for the Nintendo Switch. Square-Enix has been tight-lipped on that version, leaving some to ask if it will be modeled on the 3DS game or the PS4. We now have our answer.

According to JapaneseNintendo.com, Yuji Hori appeared at Unreal Fest East 2017 and confirmed the game is being made with the Unreal Engine, just like the PS4. The Switch port will utilize Unreal 4.15 that released earlier this year. The PS4 version of DQIX was made on Unreal 4.13.

There are at least 20 games from Japan being made for the Switch using the Unreal Engine, according to Epic Games Japan. Some of those games include Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and the Shin Megami Tensei game I am dying to hear more about.

News:: Blade Runner: When Westwood dreamt of electric sheep

In the wake of Denis Villeneuve's astounding sequel, Blade Runner 2049, People are once again speaking in excited tones about the potential for a new Blade Runner video game experience.

I remember back around 2010, when some mysterious art was leaked for an alleged "in the works" game based on Ridley Scott's original sci-fi classic. Sadly though, nothing came of this. Thus, fans got sad and went back to their hopes and dreams of unicorns, wishing that a dedicated and faithful recreation of Los Angeles 2019 would one day surface.

But, this has already happened, albeit twenty long years ago.

News:: Weekend deals: $199 Xbox One S and 20% off Battlefront II

It's not quite fight-strangers-for-deals day yet (aka Black Friday), but it appears $199 Xbox one S deals have already arrived. Now through October 10, you can pick up select Xbox One S bundles as low as $199. If you spend $30 more, you'll get to choose between a bundle with an extra controller (another $30 in savings) or a copy of Destiny 2. Spring $40 more and you'll be able to pick up a 1TB bundle in lieu of the $199 Battlefield 1 bundle. Given it's October and a newly minted Xbox One X arrives in a month, we'll only consider these if you're on a budget and you know that an Xbox One S is needed in your near future - perhaps as a Christmas gift?

If you've been enjoying Star Wars Battlefront II open-beta this weekend and have made up your mind to try the second installment (slicing people up as Darth Maul seems fun enough) - GMG has Origin key of the game for 20% off to $48 until Monday. It's not jaw-dropping deal compared to next Tuesday's release of Middle-earth: Shadow of War (which is being discounted by 38%) - but it's a noteworthy mention given

Last noteworthy deal this weekend consist of GameStop's still available pre-owned game sale (where you can pick up 4 used games as low as $10) and eBay's Columbus Day coupon which takes 20% off select deals from select retailers (Destiny 2 for Xbox One is now only $43). There's also the popular HP Omen 32 gaming monitor on tap, with the refurbished unit going for only $259 after said coupon code. Note: make sure you use PayPal during checkout as that's a requirement for the code to work.

News:: Developer blog - Game Development: Boss 101 release date announced

[The developer of this game maintains a blog in our community. Here's news straight from the boss's mouth! -papa]

We have been working on this game for over three years and the date is finally here. Really crazy stuff and we are excited and anxious about getting the game to you. All the updates, all the development and testing. It will all be in your hands soon.

We would also like to thank YOU personally for your patience. We know it’s not easy to wait for a game you want to play. We appreciate your patience and think you will agree it was worth the extra time. We’ve said it before but we certainly didn’t expect this game to go as long as it did. That extra time was about adding in the nice touches we felt were needed. Things like UI improvements, gameplay modes, tweaks to enemy behaviors, extra guns, extra levels, and on and on.

Release Date: November 2nd, 2017
Price: $9.99

Please wishlist us if you would be so kind!

Overall thoughts

What a journey! Boss 101 started over three years ago with the idea to remake the web game. It blew up from there when I (Tim) was lucky enough to team up with two incredibly talented people (Manon and Joshua). The game has evolved so much and the driving design ideas were always “Is this fun? Will people enjoy this? Is this a cool surprise?”

Boss 101 aims to bring you the most entertainment we can deliver for your hard earned money.

Game price is $9.99 and we are looking at running a game launch discount for early purchasers. We want you to have the best price we can offer (and stay in business of course! Haha)

What’s left to do?

Mostly play testing. The last few weeks have been centered on playing the game and cleaning up things to make the user experience better. That will continue. We have more updates and videos planned too so stay tuned for those.

There are still tweaks for gameplay coming but all of that is relatively minor against the scope of the game. You can check out a new Twitch stream below for some examples. All in all though – things are looking pretty good.

Hat Store Displays

Let’s talk about some additions to the hat store to make things easier to read and understand.

So we had an older setup in the store and of course we felt it was so easy to look at and comprehend. Well, let’s be honest here I (Tim) felt it was working as designed. Made sense to me! Of course that is not always the best barometer and playtesting proved we could use a little oomph to clear things up.

What were are talking about is the way hats display their abilities to the player. We have icons for powers and they give you various buffs against bosses. All hats are effectively benefit hats in Boss 101. We don’t have hats that hurt you or limit abilities. Hats will protect and grant bonuses and some are for looks. Knowing that we had to look at some of the symbology we were using.

The buff hats - First we replaced all the down arrows with little blue shields. That alone made things clearer about the hat’s abilities.

Close up of the icon work old and new

We also increased the number size on the display to make it more legible. Believe me there is a LONG story of how we got all these crazy hats with all these crazy abilities. HAHAH! At any rate – numbers got bigger but the real deal was in the hat info panel.

New Numbers Sizes and Icons in the Hat Store

In the Make A Room

Check out what we did here. We added a larger version of the number but the topper for us was the placement of the hat number at the end of the description with a percentage. We think that percentage makes it pretty clear how the hat works since we felt it was a little nebulous to people at first. Check out these examples.

Guide Panel with percentages and new design

Old and new Comparison

Ok folks, we still have lots to do in preparation for release so we’ll leave you here. Check out the Steam Store page and please wishlist us – WE HAVE A DATE NOW and it's close! Maybe Boss 101 isn’t your thing and that’s OK but perhaps a friend might be interested. We’d love you to pass along the good word about the game and help us get as many eyes on it as possible. We promise you won’t be disappointed to recommend this game to a friend!

Thank you again and talk with you soon.

Of course, remember to LIVE YOUR DREAMS!

Talk with you soon!

-Tim

News:: This is the greatest fatality in Mortal Kombat history

I remember the first time I saw a fatality in Mortal Kombat. I was watching some other kid play at an arcade in Monroe, WA and he successfully pulled off Sub-Zero’s spine rip. It was shocking to see as a seven-year-old in 1992, and just as Joe Lieberman and Herb Kohl feared, I spent the next 10 years of my life freezing people and then ripping their spines out with my bare hands. At this point, I’d like to extend my condolences to Mrs. Brazen’s sixth grade class of which there were no survivors of my rampage.

From that first game, released 25 years ago today, the fatalities got better and better and then worse for a good while and then significantly better again. Mortal Kombat X contains some of the nastiest deaths in gaming history, but none of them can compare to this beauty from Mortal Kombat (2011).

News:: Another Justice League trailer drops to remind you that it still exists

We are nary a month away from the release of Justice League and Warner Bros. has released yet another trailer. This time featuring more of Lois Lane and setting up a bit more of the story. It might venture a little too far into spoiler territory, so if you are already sold on the movie I'd say you can skip it since the release is right around the corner. For those of you who aren't sold, or are somehow spoiler-proof then here it is. Enjoy!

News:: Review: 1bitHeart

1bitHeart is a visual novel that was originally released for free by a mysterious individual known as Miwashiba (aka ○□×). There isn’t much known about them outside of their work as an illustrator and game developer. Nobody knows who they are. Maybe we never will. All anyone can really judge them by is the body of work that they’ve presented, and that’s a little refreshing in this day and age. Their games Alicemare and LiEat have both garnered positive reviews on Steam, but I haven’t yet dived that far into their catalogue. The one game I have played, 1bitHeart, is surprisingly good though.

The story revolves around a boy named Nanashi who is basically just your average socially-inept, teenage shut-in who doesn’t even bother going to school anymore. He not only has trouble forming relationships but keeping them as well. Then one day he goes to his room and finds an adorable, blue-haired, amnesiac woman who insists that he goes out into the world and make some damn friends. Seriously, that is pretty much the premise that starts everything. That is the one major overarching theme here. Don’t be a loser. Go make friends. It, against all odds, works pretty well too.

News:: As EVE: Valkyrie drops the need for VR, development moves on

EVE: Valkyrie was the first major game to ever launch on a consumer-grade VR platform (it far overshadowed Lucky's Tale back in March of 2016 on the Rift), and even though it did eventually arrive on the HTC Vive and PlayStation VR marketplaces, it maintained its VR requirement -- until recently.

Its most recent update EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone removes the VR requirement, but it does it in the best way possible by still allowing full cross-platform support across the PC and PS4, eliminating all walled gardens in the process, including an actual (still expensive) headset.

Lead designer Andrew Willans had a lot to say about this journey at a Valkyrie keynote at EVE Vegas this week, as the team prepares for its eight update to arrive this winter.

News:: For its 25th anniversary, Destructoid names the top 10 Mortal Kombat kharacters

The fighting genre had been kicking around in the video game industry for more than a decade before Street Fighter II hit arcades. Older gamers will probably remember playing Karate Champ or The Way of the Exploding Fist or Urban Champion or even the original Street Fighter. They all laid the foundation for Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. That game, hitting arcades in winter of 1991, revitalized the sagging arcade industry and inspired developers and publishers around the world to give fighting games a chance.

Midway, probably best known at this point in time for its pinball machines and Rampage, wanted its own fighting game and gave the job to Ed Boon and John Tobias. 10 months and lord knows how many rolls of Hi-8 film later, we got Mortal Kombat. Where Street Fighter was refined and disciplined, Mortal Kombat was brash and immature. It lacked characters with differentiating combat styles, choosing to focus on the badass special moves people love to spam and its congressional hearing instigating finishers.

Mortal Kombat came about at the perfect time as gamers who grew up with the NES looked for more adult experiences, or at least experiences juveniles equate with being an adult. It was one of the original propagators of “fake news” as a single secret character tucked away in the original game’s code led to an avalanche of bullshit schoolyard tips and tricks that supposedly did everything from letting characters have sex to unlock blood in the SNES original. And though 99% of every rumor surrounding the game was bologna, I didn’t care. I tried to uncover each and every one.

The game is quintessentially 90s. It oozes the Bart Simpson/Sonic the Hedgehog don’t-give-a-shit irreverence of a decade. It was cool in an era where the most important thing was to be cool and there is no way it would be as cherished as well as it is today without those seven original characters. Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Sonia Blade, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Kano and Lui Kang were absolute badasses to a seven-year-old kid. Sequels continued to push the limits of decency at the time by adding new characters with puberty inducing sex appeal to its wanton violence while also finding the humor of it all with babalities and friendship finishers.

25 years and 10 games later – if you don’t count the spin-offs – has led to a roster that has more than 60 characters. From those original seven who caused an uproar in the United States to guest characters from some of cinema’s greatest horror films, Mortal Kombat is a treasure trove of eternally memorable fighters as well as some extremely forgettable ones. It would be a waste of everyone’s time to rank people like Kobra and Blaze, so I asked the Destructoid staff to vote for their 10 favorite characters and you can see the results below.

News:: VA-11 Hall-A and why you should be very afraid of artificial life

With the recent cinema release of Blade Runner 2049, as well as a handful of Blade Runner shorts on YouTube, I don't really need to tell you that there is a sense of dread surrounding "Replicants" and enhanced humans. It's not just a problem with how strong, fast or intelligent these creations are – they manage to bring out the worst in humans, because some humans can switch off their conscience when it comes to artificial life.

A game which explores this issue from a different angle is the brilliant VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action, which is available on Steam (a Vita version is in the works). It takes place in Glitch City in the year 207X, after humans have been infected with nanomachines to keep track of the population. Some people use technological developments to their advantage, enhancing themselves to become more agile, stronger or more suited to their jobs. Others suffer from nanomachine rejection, with the atmosphere slowly killing them. Lilim (humanoid robots) are used in the entertainment and sex industries. By playing as a human bartender, Jill, the player gets to see into how nanomachine infection and the integration of cyborgs into society have changed human behaviour. And these changes are largely for the worse.

Beware: this piece contains spoilers!

Nintendo has revealed a trailer for ARMS, showcasing the upcoming 3.2 update for this month. If you've been struggling to get money for more arms, this update is for you.

News:: New York Comic Con 2017: Saturday's Cosplay

Representing Flixist, this lonely writer made his first pilgrimage to the holy mecca of nerddom that is the New York Comic Con. I'd done my research. I'd read the guide, and reached out to those I knew who'd bravely gone before me. Their words of wisdom: bring water, more water, and comfortable shoes. Oh and cash. Lots of cash. Then meet me at the abandoned lot on 38th Street between 10th and 11th. One mugging later, and I was ready to begin my descent into lines, constant jostling, cosplay, and panels filled with beautiful celebrities.

The one thing I wasn't prepared for? Half of the 1.8 million square feet of Javits Center smelling overpoweringly of ketchup.
