News:: The creator of QWOP has a painful new game

Bennett Foddy, the guy behind the fumbling, funny, hard-to-control running game QWOP, is coming out with something new soon. Something that's also frustrating yet hard to permanently put down.

His next project is Getting Over It. It's an homage to Sexy Hiking, an old physics-centric platform game created by Jazzuo, and, well, you're better off seeing this delightfully odd thing for yourself:

You're a nude dude in a cauldron scaling rocks, trees, and other assorted (and increasingly devious) obstacles using a sledgehammer while a narrator chimes in from time to time. Any questions?

I've played a bit of a preview build and the experience reminds me of trying to master something like Trials HD. You have to get a feel for the game's physics and momentum, and with enough practice, your maneuvers start to become second nature. Then it's just a matter of executing. Again and again.

I will never beat Getting Over It. No way. Not a chance. But, I'm fine with that.

Foddy is debuting Getting Over It as a "Humble Original" in the October 2017 Humble Monthly Bundle, which is available for the next seven days and costs $12 (the other confirmed game is Rise of the Tomb Raider). Following that, you'll be able to buy the title on its own this December through Steam.

News:: Mario smacks Yoshi's noggin to make that tongue do work

When Mario motions his arm forward in Super Mario World and Yoshi's tongue unfurls, Mario is not pointing to where Yoshi should lick. He is punching him in the god damn head, according to Nintendo.

Fans have tried to take a close look at the Mario-riding-Yoshi sprite and subsequent, official artwork to prove Mario isn't abusing his ride, but the latter is actually a retcon, according to developers Takashi Tezuka and Shigefumi Hino, speaking in an interview with Nintendo's official site and translated by Kotaku.

"I think he likes horses," Tezuka said of Shigeru Miyamoto, who reportedly drew a photo of Mario on a horse and pinned it on the wall near his desk during Super Mario Bros. 3 development. "When I saw that, I thought, 'I guess he wants Mario to ride something,'" Tezuka said. He "had Hino draw reptile type art," fitting with the "dinosaur land" concept in SMW, with "horse" as the frame of reference for this, "large lizard type creature."

"It looked like a crocodile," Tezuka said. He sketched out a cuter character that Hino would then turn into Yoshi. And here's the smoking gun from the creators' mouths.

"Lots of people think that while Mario is pointing his finger foreward, he's saying 'Go,' and Yoshi's tongue comes out," Hino said. "However, the set up that I drew was that when Mario punches Yoshi in the head, the character's tongue shoots out in surprise. What’s more, there’s an added 'bop' sound. However, it seemed like people would say 'Poor Yoshi,' so that’s why it became that Mario is saying 'Go.'"

News:: Insane PUBG player spends $1,015 on a red bandana

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is fun as shit, but when you've got 10 million sales and 1 million concurrent players, it's also big money, and bound to pick up some obsessives. Like the kind of player who drops more than a fucking stack on a purely cosmetic item.

The red bandana has been selling for hundreds on the Steam market place over the past few months, but it was being sold for as low as $20 back in March. It originally comes from a loot crate that players who pre-ordered the $40 Deluxe edition of the game received. And, hey, maybe back in March you think, "I dropped $40 on this game, but I got an item that people are buying off me for $20, so it's like I only paid $20 on this game. Score!"

Well fuck you, dipshit! You could've sold that shit for a fucking grand if you sat on it. Not doing shit wins again, motherfucker! Meanwhile my most expensive PUBG item is only selling for like $7.

News:: Shenmue 3 characters can move their face now

Hot off a $6.3 million Kickstarter campaign [squints] two and a half years ago, Shenmue 3 characters can now move their faces, as evidenced in the update above. Facial animations were actually implemented three months back, but none were coded for the first, short trailer two months ago. In fact, many of those character models weren't even finished; they were temporary.

Unsurprisingly, Shenmue 3 is missing its planned 2017 release and now coming in the latter half of next year. So we have a while to wait to see if the story-heavy game gives us as much joy as Mass Effect: Andromeda's fucked up faces. For now, enjoy a concerned old lady.

News:: Capcom is fixing Dead Rising 4 on Xbox when it comes to PS4

Capcom is fixing up former Xbox One exclusive Dead Rising 4 with an update of fan-requested changes timed to coincide with the release of the definitive Dead Rising 4: Frank's Big Package for PS4.

AI tweaks, new enemies, and new side-quests pair with an all-around tuneup to bring the Xbox One version -- which was a flop, sales-wise, for Capcom despite only reviewing slightly worse than Dead Rising 3 on average -- up to parity with the PS4 release, which Capcom is assuredly hoping gets off on a better foot and makes up for its predecessor's tanked sales. The PC version is getting the fixes, too. Check the Capcom Blog for a full explanation.

News:: Play 'Lawbreakers' for free on PC this weekend

It hasn't been two months since team shooter Lawbreakers launched in early August and the game is inviting players to try it for free on PC this weekend, starting today. That's likely because the PC playerbase is dismal, peaking at 161 players total over the last 24 hours according to Steam's charts. But if you play and like it, the game's studio Boss Key Productions is knocking 25 percent off the cover price to keep you onboard.

News:: Pyre has a challenging new campaign mode

Pyre players looking for an excuse to undertake another mystical adventure are getting exactly that with an update out now on Steam and coming soon to PlayStation 4. The update, "True Nightwing," introduces a new mode "designed to enhance playing through the Campaign successive times."

  • Base difficulty same as Heightened.
  • All Titan Stars unlocked, and some must be used.
  • Enlightenment required to rank up re-scaled.
  • Cannot load checkpoints or restart Rites.
  • Book of Rites and White Lute fully unlocked.
  • Slugmarket inventory fully unlocked.
  • Feats of Glory introduced much sooner.
  • Note: Once chosen, this setting cannot be changed.

This mode is accessible once you've cleared Pyre for the first time. And if you've already done that, you won't need to do anything extra -- it should be waiting for you the next time you boot up the game. Supergiant's Greg Kasavin adds that, thankfully, "[m]any of the early tutorials are skippable."

The studio has also come out with two bonus albums -- one featuring acoustic covers, the other featuring eight variations of "Never to Return" -- and some sweet Pyre merch: a t-shirt and a poster.

News:: Opinion: Vivendi needs to stop

Before I get started on my long-winded tangent down below, let me go over the basic events that inspired it. Vivendi is currently trying to decide if a Ubisoft takeover is even worth it. I've always assumed, like most sane individuals, that it was only a matter of time before it swallowed Ubisoft up whole, but, apparently, there's still a glimmer of hope left for the French publisher to get out of this without too much more of a fight. Vivendi is, reportedly, in the process of figuring out whether it should buy in or sell out of its shares in the company. I sincerely hope that it takes the latter approach.

Currently, Vivendi has already obtained a 26% stake in the company. According to Bloomberg, its voting rights will double soon, and it’ll have an opportunity to reach upwards of 30% ownership. At that point, French law dictates that the big V would be forced to make an official bid for a takeover. It’s already been shot down once by Ubisoft management recently when seeking a board seat, so it seems the publisher is ready to fight this to the end.

This isn't Vivendi's first rodeo either. After owning a controlling stake in Activision Blizzard, it eventually sold its shares for a combined total of approximately $9.3 billion. That's also around the same time that it started knocking at Ubisoft's front door.

News:: Friday release deals: Cuphead and FIFA 18 up to 27% off for PC gamers

Gearing up for a big release this Friday are two titles making waves and they are very much on the opposite end of the spectrum: Cuphead, an anticipated indie run-and-gun platformer, and FIFA 18, from EA Sports. It's a football game that you may have heard of before.

Beyond the September 28 release date, there really isn't anything similar about the titles except for the deals available for PC gamers. Cuphead has been in development all the way since 2010, while FIFA 18 is... yet another annual FIFA title (though this marks year two on the Frostbite 3 engine).

As of writing, you can pick both titles up at GMG discounted up to 27% off. Before you get excited though, the biggest discount is reserved only to the Cuphead Deluxe Edition which includes the game's original soundtrack. The game is quickly climbing the sales chart, currently #9 on the top seller list on Steam, and #1 and #3 at GMG.

Friday Release PC Deals

Recently Released PC Deals

With Cuphead shaping up to be a potential indie hit, we're quite curious how it'll fare at the "box office" tomorrow. As for FIFA 18, despite our earlier dig, the franchise is hugely popular and if you've played any FUT games before you'll know how addicting it can be. The discount on FIFA 18 is more muted at 18% off for the Origin key, but honestly, most gamers planning to get the game are probably playing on consoles instead.

With September closing out, we've also spotted some pretty good deals on recently released titles such as Ruiner, Project CARS 2, and Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, along with today's release of Total War: Warhammer II

Most deals above should last through the week, but we'll update accordingly given they are new titles and digital retailers always love playing with pricing depending on how a title is selling.

News:: LawBreakers is running a free weekend on Steam

Boss Key is hoping to give LawBreakers a much-needed push with a free weekend event. From now until Monday, October 2 at 10:00am Pacific, the frantic multiplayer shooter is freely playable on Steam.

Going one step further, the studio is incentivizing new and returning players. 100 randomly-selected free users who play 50 matches during the event will win a Steam key for LawBreakers, and 100 existing users who meet that same criteria will win 24 Stash Drops. Note: "Players outside of the United States and Canada (excluding Quebec) are eligible to win in-game Stash Drops only."

LawBreakers is also 25 percent off for Steam and PlayStation 4 until October 4 at 10:00am PT. Unfortunately for the game, these promos overlap with this weekend's Call of Duty: WWII open beta.

News:: thatgamecompany's serene Flower is now on iOS

Flower wasn't thatgamecompany's first release, but it did put the studio on the map for a lot of folks. It's a beautiful, calming experience about gliding across fields and picking up flower petals, and I dug it. The team's new game Sky is coming to iOS, but first we've got a surprise Flower port.

The artsy adventure is now available for iPhone and iPad ($4.99) courtesy of Annapurna Interactive, who has really begun making a name for itself in the indie game space with great titles like What Remains of Edith Finch, Wattam, Donut Country, and the console ports of Kentucky Route Zero.

Playing Flower on a small screen doesn't sound ideal, but I bet the tilt controls work well.

News:: Q-Games is bringing Dead Hungry to PlayStation VR

I'll follow Q-Games wherever it goes, even if that means manning a food truck overrun by zombies.

Dead Hungry, a game about cooking burgers and feeding the undead, launched late last year on Steam. Now, the virtual reality title is headed to PlayStation VR with support for DualShock 4 and PlayStation Move controllers. It's not the prettiest, but I love frying up and serving food in VR.

The PSVR version will be out October 24. I gotta remember to charge my Move controllers.

News:: For some reason, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is now backward compatible on Xbox One

Love it or hate it, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare was a thing that definitely happened. It was also the final version of gaming's most popular series that had a proper last-gen port. While Black Ops III did see a version on PS3 and Xbox 360, it skipped the campaign and shipped with only the multiplayer. If you wanted to experience whatever happened in that craptastic story, you had to pony up for a new console. With Advanced Warfare, you could still live in your blissful 720p world and feel Call of Duty's painstakingly crafted thrills.

If, for some reason, you owned an Xbox One and decided to go with the 360 version of Advanced Warfare, your day was arrived. The most divisive entry in the series is now available on the backward compatibility service, making me question why Activision even bothered with porting it over. I suppose its a nice gesture for people that really just did not want to rebuy the title for Microsoft's fancy new box. You can get the game pre-owned on 360 for half the price of its next-gen brother, so that is an incentive if you just want to try it.

Along with Call of Duty comes Sonic Adventure to the backward compatible service. That did not have a physical release, so you'll be stuck with buying it digitally on your console. I'm not sure if the DX Edition DLC is included, but I would assume so (most DLC does carry over). Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is also finally available for digital purchase, so you can clear up some shelf space by downloading the title.

News:: Blade Runner 2049 has three prequel shorts, the last from director of Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop

The original Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford and directed by Ridley Scott, was released in 1982 and took place in 2019. The follow-up, Blade Runner 2049, is jumping ahead a bit into the future as we've nearly reached the time period for the original film and have yet to develop totally realistic synthetic androids called replicants. Oh well, Back to the Future didn't get it right either. Or Demolition Man for that matter.

But now, to build a bit of history between the original film and its sequel, director Denis Villeneuve had some friends create three short prequel pieces that outline some of the important events that transpire in the Blade Runner universe between the two films. And don't look for low budget, made-for-TV bridge material here; the first stars Jared Leto, playing the same role from the forthcoming film, the second features a convincingly serious Dave Bautista, and third was created by legendary anime director Shinichirô Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo).

News:: The latest ‘Super Mario Run’ update is available for download

The update to Super Mario Run has arrived. We heard about the new features planned for the game last week, a main one being the introduction of Remix 10 -- super quick courses that include Bonus Games and one Super Bonus Game that can get you some new buildings for Kingdom Builder mode. Super Mario Run will also now include Daisy as a playable character who has the ability to jump while she's already in midair.

News:: Blaster Master Zero's next update adds a 'Boss Rush' mode

I'm surprised that I'm still writing about Blaster Master Zero. The game launched alongside the Switch, but is still receiving a bunch of free updates with new game modes and characters. The next update to come to the 2D revival will be a boss rush mode, though it's not as simple as that sounds.

While the 3DS and Switch will receive a generic, single-player only version of boss rush, the Switch version will also be getting a co-op enabled mode titled "Multi Boss Blast." As you can see in the video below (courtesy of Nintendo Everything), the mode looks like a total blast with a friend. I especially like being able to use the DLC characters instead of just having a palette swap.

News:: Mighty Gunvolt Burst just got two DLC characters, more Mighty No. 9 love

Mighty No. 9 refuses to die. Despite the fact that most people felt like it failed to meet expectations, the property lives on through other means, most recently as one half of Mighty Gunvolt Burst (the other part is Azure Striker Gunvolt).

It's back from the dead yet again too, as Burst just got a spot a of DLC that involves Call (the Roll to Beck's Mega Man) and Joule (the counterpart to Gunvolt). Both of them are 200 yen each on the Japanese eShop right now (roughly $2), and are confirmed for the west.

Sure, I'll play Burst again with two more characters -- I've been looking for an excuse! It's low key one of the best Mega Man games in recent years.

News:: League of Legends' Evelynn is getting a rework

Evelynn, a stealth melee character that's been in League of Legends since 2009, has been reworked. She'll still be stealth oriented, but this time she'll sport new CC capabilities with a charm effect that fits her lore, and an area-of-effect ultimate. She can also regenerate more health in the bush, and she'll get her natural camo a little later at level 6.

Even though she's one of my least played Champions (mostly because she was so uneven, something Riot hopes to rectify in this rework), I've always dug the whole regal demon motif -- Guilty Gear also did right by it with Slayer.

News:: Red Dead Redemption 2 gets a purdy new trailer

Rockstar Games have released their next trailer for the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2, which was announced earlier in the year before being delayed to spring 2018. Sadly, the latest trailer doesn't seem to narrow that time window down. But it sure looks purdy, all while showcasing plenty of juicy new details.

The biggest and most notable of which is that we now have more information on a playable character and potential protagonist in the form of “Arthur Morgan,” which was confirmed from the official Rockstar Games UK YouTube channel description:

News:: Nintendo Download: Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters

Pretty much every Nintendo platform is active this week, as the Wii U is getting Hive Jump -- a game that was only released on PC earlier this year. Oh, and Super Ultra Star Shooter and Double Dungeons.

The Switch is the big jewel again though, as you'll be able to pick up Binaries, Butcher, Brave Dungeon, Deemo, Earth Atlantis, Inversus Deluxe, Sparkle 2, Tower of Babel, Golf Story, Phyiscal Contact: Picture Place, Astro Bears Party, FIFA 18, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime, NeoGeo Burning Fight, Conga Master Party, Picross S, Arcade Archives: Mario Bros., and One Piece Unlimited World Red Deluxe. The 3DS is also getting Yo-Kai Watch 2: Psychic Specters, which is an upgraded "third" version of the second game, similar to the Pokemon upgrades.

If you're so inclined you can also try to grab an SNES Classic, which has Star Fox 2 packed-in, though that's not technically a download!

News:: See how Dragon's Dogma stacks up upgrading from PS3 to PS4

Dragon's Dogma is one of those games I can just go back to at any time. Even if I'm not doing the main story I can just screw around and have fun -- and live out my wildest Berserk fantasies (though we've since gotten a recent Berserk game that I can do that in!).

Now it's coming to the current generation, which will make it even easier to mess about in when I don't have to hook up my Xbox 360. If you aren't sold at all and want to see how it stacks up, Capcom just put up a PS3 to PS4 comparison video. It doesn't look like all that much of an upgrade all told, I just hope they're able to maintain a consistent framerate.

Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen was released back in 2013 on consoles (2016 on PC), but is set to arrive on Xbox One and PS4 soon.
